Persons who abuse substances often act out, do poorly in school, and are at risk of unplanned pregnancies, violence, and infectious diseases. Drug addiction is a chronic brain disease with drug seeking behaviors. Adolescence is a critical time to prevent addiction as the brain is still forming.
A substance abuse counselor (Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor) is trained in developing rapport with the substance user. Rapport or a comfortable relationship is essential between a counselor and client. The counselor shows empathy in putting themselves in the client's shoes in order to understand motivation and feelings underlying a clients abuse. The counselor is genuine and honest with the client during the counseling relationship and is also attentive to the client in both verbal and non verbal behaviors. The counselor is very respectful of the client and regards the client as a valued person having a life struggle who has the strength within them to overcome the struggle and make it in life.
